Several local middle school basketball teams participated in a tournament at Jefferson Middle School during the week end of April 16th-19th 2009. Cosby, Edgemont, Parrottsvile, and Maury middle school were some of the teams that hit the hardwood.

Cocke County wins pair in Roundball Classic

JOHNSON CITY-Faced with an opportunity to avenge their only loss to date in the young season, the Lady Red of Cocke County High took full advantage.
They also showed how a little payback can feel.
The Lady Red won a physical battle with the Lady Hilltoppers of Science Hill by a 65-49 score in the DoubleTree Roundball at the Palace Classic. The Fighting Cocks defeated Louisville Collegiate 44-30 in the second game of the night. Science Hill defeated Walton, Georgia 84-82 in double overtime.

Cocke County Native Earns Ontario Angler Award

Cocke County native Paul “Phil” Leatherwood is 85 but still knows how to catch big fish. He earned Ontario Angler Awards for three trophy fish caught this summer near Ignace, Ontario, Canada. Leatherwood is an avid fisherman and makes the yearly 2,900-mile trip to Agimak Lake Resort by car with his daughter and family. His largest catch was a 37-inch Northern Pike on July 25th on Little Indian Lake. Leatherwood also earned awards for a 34-inch Pike caught July 20th on McNamara Lake, and a 30-inch Pike, July 24th, at Little Indian. Now living in Waynesville, N.C., he is originally from Ravens Branch.
