Volleyball: Lady Red Falls In Tourney

It wasn’t because of a lack of effort. And, they certainly played with a lot
of heart. But, it was not to be for the Cocke County Lady Red volleyball
squad as the District 2-AAA Tournament shifted to Jefferson County High
School on Wednesday. The Lady Red, with just seven players in uniform,
went up against the Lady Patriots, and gave it their best fight. Jefferson
County took the first two sets, 25-19, 25-19, and looked set to make a quick
advance to the semifinals. But, the Lady Red fought back in the third set.
The Lady Red’s lone senior, Courtney Lewis, reeled off ten unanswered points
to take the set 25-19. During the 10-point stretch, Lewis had two aces while
Kara Morgan added two kills. The fight was still there in set No. 4 as the
Lady Red tried to send the match to a tie-breaker. The Lady Patriots built a
15-8 lead, but the Lady Red managed to pull within four, 20-16. That was a
close as the Lady Red would get, however, as the Lady Patriots pulled away
for a 25-16 victory, and 3-1 match victory, ending the Lady Red’s season.
Lewis ended her Cocke County volleyball career with 16 kills and 3 aces.
All seven of these girls played extremely hard, said Lady Red head coach
E.L. Biddle. They played excellent volleyball, and they played with a lot
of effort. We missed the contributions of Tracy (Laymen), who is sick and
couldn’t be with us tonight. But, I am so very proud of each and every one
of these ladies.
