FROGVOL REPORT: Nascar 2010
Only ten races into the season and Jimmy Johnson #48 is ten points behind Kevin Harvick #29. Could this be the season where some one besides Johnson, who has won four straight titles, takes the crown at the end of the season? Only time will tell, but Johnson has the most wins already this year with three, followed by Denny Hamlin #11 with two wins.
Johnson has been hot the past four years winning the title in 2009 by 141 points, 2008 by 69, 2007 by 77, and 2006 by 56. How many titles can one team win in a row?
Hamlin told Johnson at the end of last season “I’m coming for you” and maybe he delivered that message with a win this past week at Darlington. Denny won both events this weekend at Darlington, and became the first driver in seventeen years to sweep both events.
Here is how the standings look after 10 of 36 races.
1. Kevin Harvick 1467
2. Jimmie Johnson -10
3. Kyle Bush -109
4. Matt Kenseth -119
5. Greg Biffle -133
6. Jeff Gordon -162
7. Denny Hamlin -199
8. Kurt Bush -212
9. Jeff Burton -220
10. Mark Martin -225
11. Carl Edwards -240
12. Clint Bowyer -254
13. Dale Earnhardt Jr. -258 *
14. Martin Truex Jr. -271*
15. Tony Stewart -307 *
* NOTE: Only the top twelve drivers are eligible for the chase after 26 of 36 races.
Tennessee Baseball hanging in there!
The Tennessee Vols Baseball Team (27-21 Overall, 11-13 SEC) is
trying to stay in the top eight in the SEC so they can go to the SEC tournament. Only the top eight teams get to advance to the tourney which will be held in Hoover Alabama on May 26th through May 31st. They just finished out a three game series with Georgia (13-33, 3-19) with a win on Friday May 7th 4-1, Saturday May 8th 25-5, and Sunday May 9th 14-11.
Junior Cody Hawn had two home runs and 8 RBIs, including a first inning Grand Slam, in Sundays match-up to give the Vols the comeback victory.
Alabama also won on Sunday to keep the Vols hopes alive to make it to the SEC tourney. With only eight games left including a three game series at Auburn (32-15, 14-9) and at home against Alabama (28-19, 9-14), the Vols have a good chance of making the tournament. The remaining schedule also includes home games against Middle Tennessee State (29-18, 14-10 Sun Belt) and UNC Asheville (12-29, 5-16 Big South).
Tennessee Smokies In First Place
The Tennessee Smokies (20-10) are in first place in the Southern League. As an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs the Smokies have proved this season that their is a reason to be excited about minor league baseball. Tennessee sits atop of their division in the North with Huntsville (16-14) trailing behind. Jacksonville (19-10) is tops in the South. Although it is still early in the season and alot can happen, the Smokies are an exciting team to watch. They begin a five game home stand against the Carolina Mudcats (11-19) on Monday May 10th at Smokies Park in Sevierville.
They seem to do much better on the road, as they are 12-3 away and 8-7 at home.
FrogVol Report: 2010 Football Season
The 2010 football season is fast approaching and once again Vol fans are “up in arms”. After Lame Kitten’s quick exit to take the head coaching job at USC a quick search was on to find another man for the job.
On January 15th 2010 Derek Dooley was named the 22nd head coach at the University of Tennessee.
Dooley is 41 years old and was born in Athens Georgia, he is the son of legendary UGA coach Vince Dooley.
Dooley played football as a walk-on wide receiver for the Virgina Cavaliers, where he earned a scholarship after his sophomore season. The Cavaliers went to three bowl games during Dooley’s stint, including a conference title game in 1989. He was named first-team Academic All-ACC , his senior year. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in government and foreign affairs, and earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia four years later. Before beginning his football coaching career he practiced law in Atlanta.
Coach Dooley has had an extensive career in the collegiate level with stints at UGA in 1996 as a graduate assistant. He was a wide receivers coach at Southern Methodist University and also assisted in recruiting there.
2000-04, LSU was Dooleys home as he helped as the Tigers’ recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, then as the running backs and special teams coach.
In December of 2006 he got his first head coaching job at Louisiana Tech where he had a record of 17-20 including a bowl victory (Independence Bowl). He led his team to a 8-5 record in 2008.
Before that he served on the Miami Dolphins coaching staff with Nick Sabin until he was offered the job at LA Tech.
Dooley is married to a doctor and they have three children.
Dooley seems to me to be a level headed guy with a lot of class and I think he will be a great fit for the Vols, but that’s what i said about “Lame Kitten”, so only time will tell!
“Everything we’re going to do is going to be done with a foundation of integrity with every aspect of the program,” Dooley said. “We’re going to represent this institution with class on and off the field.” (ESPN)
He also has a son named Peyton which goes well here in Big Orange Country.
Also he has a tough road ahead of him as the Vols lost recruits left and right after “Lame’s” abrupt departure. The Vols still picked up the number nine recruiting class in the country according to rivals.com with such athletes as four star recruit Tyler Bray, 6-6 187 QB, who was clocked in the forty yard dash at 5.45 seconds. Also the son of famous NFL quarterback Phil Simms, Matt 6-3 215, who is transferring from junior college.
The schedule will not make it any easier either. With several powerhouse teams on the schedule this year.
Lets hope Dooley can bring the Vols back to the national spotlight where they belong!
